📊 Professional Vocabulary

Speak the language of your sector.

Sector-by-sector professional Bangla vocabulary — banking, law, medicine, education, NGOs, government, IT, and more. The terminology that marks you as a true professional.

Why Professional Vocabulary Matters

General Bangla fluency — the ability to have conversations, write letters, and understand everyday speech — is a tremendous asset. But in professional environments, general fluency is only the starting point. Every field has its own specialised vocabulary, its own way of framing concepts, and its own register of technical terms that professionals use to communicate precisely and efficiently with colleagues who share the same knowledge base.

In Bangladesh, this is as true as anywhere. A banker who cannot use terms like মূলধন পর্যাপ্ততা (capital adequacy) or অনাদায়ী ঋণ (non-performing loan) in Bangla will struggle to function in Bangladeshi banking meetings. A doctor who cannot discuss রোগ নির্ণয় পদ্ধতি (diagnostic procedure) or শল্যচিকিৎসা (surgical operation) in professional Bangla cannot practise effectively in Bangladesh's healthcare system. A development worker who cannot discuss উপকারভোগী (beneficiary), জবাবদিহিতা (accountability), or টেকসই উন্নয়ন (sustainable development) is limited in their ability to work effectively in Bangladesh's vibrant NGO sector.

This page provides curated professional vocabulary across eight major sectors active in Bangladesh. For each sector, we give the most important terms with Bangla script, transliteration, English meaning, and where possible an example phrase showing the term in professional context.

Sector 1: Banking & Finance — ব্যাংকিং ও অর্থ

Bangladesh's banking sector — comprising state-owned commercial banks, private commercial banks, Islamic banks, specialised banks, and the central bank (Bangladesh Bank) — is one of the most important professional sectors in the country. Banking Bangla blends Arabic-origin financial terminology (from Islamic finance traditions) with Sanskrit-derived formal vocabulary and modern English loanwords.

Sector 2: Law & Justice — আইন ও বিচার

Bangladesh's legal system is rooted in common law (inherited from British India) and overlaid with Islamic family law for Muslim citizens. Legal Bangla is heavily Sanskrit-derived for formal terms and often uses direct Arabic/Persian terms for Islamic law concepts. Court proceedings, legal documents, and bar communications are conducted in Bangla.

Sector 3: Healthcare & Medicine — স্বাস্থ্য ও চিকিৎসা

Bangladesh's healthcare sector spans government hospitals, private clinics, NGO health programmes, and a large pharmaceutical industry. Medical Bangla blends Sanskrit-derived formal clinical vocabulary with everyday terms patients use. Healthcare professionals need to operate in both registers — formal with colleagues, accessible with patients.

Sector 4: NGO & Development — এনজিও ও উন্নয়ন

Bangladesh is home to thousands of NGOs working in poverty reduction, microfinance, health, education, disaster management, climate adaptation, and women's empowerment. The development sector uses a distinctive blend of Bangla and international development jargon (often directly borrowed as loanwords).

Sector 5: Government & Public Administration — সরকার ও প্রশাসন

Bangladesh's public administration uses a very formal, structured variety of Bangla with specific conventions for official correspondence, gazettes, circulars, and policy documents. BCS officers and public servants need to master this register — characterised by passive constructions, formal imperatives, and specific administrative vocabulary.

Sector 6: IT & Technology — তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি

Bangladesh's IT sector is growing rapidly, with a thriving software industry, a large freelancing community, and government ambitions for a digital economy. IT Bangla is heavily English-influenced — most technical terms are direct loanwords — but formal documentation, client communication in Bangladeshi companies, and government IT procurement use adapted Bangla terminology.

Building Your Professional Vocabulary: A System

The most effective approach to building professional vocabulary is not to memorise long lists in isolation, but to encounter terms repeatedly in authentic professional contexts and to use them actively in your own writing and speech. Here is a proven system:

  1. Identify your priority sector. Focus first on the vocabulary of your current or target professional field. Master the 50 most important terms in that sector before moving to others.
  2. Learn terms in sentences. For each professional term, find or create an example sentence in a professional Bangla context. Write it in your vocabulary journal. The sentence creates a memory hook far stronger than the isolated word.
  3. Read professional materials daily. Subscribe to a Bangladeshi newspaper and read the business, health, or governance pages relevant to your sector. Note unfamiliar terms, look them up, and add them to your journal.
  4. Use the term within 24 hours. After learning a new professional term, use it in a written sentence, an email draft, or a spoken sentence within the next day. Active use within 24 hours dramatically increases retention.
  5. Review weekly. Set aside 15 minutes every Sunday to review the professional terms you learned that week. Spaced repetition — reviewing at increasing intervals — is the most efficient way to move vocabulary from short-term to long-term memory.
